Bio

Alex Severson is a Senior Research Scientist I at, and Deputy Director of, the Center for Applied Research and Analysis (CARA). Prior to joining CARA in 2020, Alex received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Florida State University in 2018 and taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor of American Politics in the Department of Political Science at Boise State University for two years. His research interests span the areas of applied policy evaluation, causal inference, experimental methods, public opinion, and survey methodology, and his peer-reviewed research has been published in outlets including State Politics and Policy Quarterly, The Journal of Experimental Political Science, and Social Science Quarterly. In his time at CARA, Alex has worked on various components of ISR's process and outcome evaluations of the Department of Behavioral Health Services' Behavioral Health Initiative-funded Peer Case Management program, Education and Training program, Mobile Crisis Team program, and Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program and has also worked on evaluating the predictive validity of the New Mexico Corrections Department's inmate custody classification risk assessments.
