Tony Ortiz, J.D., is the Deputy Director of the New Mexico Sentencing Commission (NMSC). He has worked at the NMSC since 2004 and served as the director from 2009 to 2016.

Professional Experience

He manages NMSC research projects related to the criminal and juvenile justice systems.  The findings and recommendations set forth in the NMSC’s research reports are widely disseminated to policy makers in all three branches of state government. 

Annual research projects include: prison population forecasting; the impact on inmate’s sentence lengths of earned meritorious deductions; resource needs assessments for the Judiciary, District Attorneys and the Public Defender Department; and collection of jail data.

During legislative sessions, Tony summarizes criminal and juvenile justice legislative proposals for the member’s of the NMSC’s Legislative Committee.  The committee member’s comments regarding the proposals are distributed to policy makers during legislative sessions.   

The New Mexico Sentencing Commission also has sub-committees that work on justice information sharing, juvenile matters, and sex offender issues.  Tony serves on or staffs those committees. 

Previous Professional Experience

Tony worked as a staff attorney for the New Mexico Legislative Council Service from 1989 until 2004. His duties included drafting proposed legislation, researching legal issues and staffing interim legislative study committees.

From 1987 until 1989, Tony worked as a staff attorney for the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office.  He prosecuted consumer fraud actions and assisted with the development and drafting of proposed legislation regarding consumer fraud.
